Jumping Quarterbacks!

July 26th, 2009  |  Published in Funny Poses  |  6 Comments

Last month I posted examples of my favorite pose on football cards, the pose in which the player is sitting, holding his helmet. This month I thought I’d post my favorite action shot: the quarterback throwing a jump pass. Shown here are 1960 Fleer Tom O’Connell, 1959 Topps King Hill, 1956 Topps George Shaw, and–complete with blockers!–1958 Topps Lamar McHan. Want more? The 1960 Fleer set uses the shot for at least five quarterbacks.

I couldn’t recall ever seeing a jump pass–or at least an intentional one–in a game, so I did a little YouTube search. I turned up a couple: Ralph Guglielmi of Notre Dame (at about 1:20) and Tim Tebow of Florida.

Joe Kapp – only man to play QB in a Rose Bowl, a Super Bowl and a Grey Cup. It was his trademark. For those of you too young to remember, he was laso in the original “Longest Yard.”

Reading this post reminds me of an article I read about Bobby Bowden. It’s about his love for Alabama football and his idol, a QB named Harry Gilmer who did the jump pass.

Thanks for posting the link, Jeremy. I love the photo of Air Gilmer halfway down the right side.

[…] Having seen only his NFL cards, I didn’t know about Etcheverry’s accomplishments in the CFL. As a player he appeared in three Grey Cups (CFL championship games), and he was the league’s most outstanding player in 1954. He passed for 586 yards in one game in 1954, and in 1956 he had a 109-yard pass–no, not a typo, because the CFL’s field is 110 yards long. Etcheverry’s CFL Hall of Fame page has a nice summary of his accomplishments and a great photo of him throwing a jump pass. (I love this shot: see my jumping quarterbacks post.) […]
