Dick Stanfel and Jack Butler are the 2012 senior finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. Stanfel's rookie football card is a 1955 Bowman; Butler's is a 1957 Topps.

Dick Stanfel and Jack Butler were named yesterday as the 2012 senior finalists for induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. You can read the announcement and see the players’ biographies on the Hall of Fame site. This is the second time Stanfel has been chosen as a senior finalist; the first time was in 1993.

In the 1950s, defensive players and offensive linemen often got short shift, card-wise, and that is the case with these two players. Butler, a defensive back, played for the Steelers from 1951 to 1959, but he did not appear on a football card until his seventh season, 1957. His rookie card, a 1957 Topps, is pictured here. He also appeared on 1958 Topps and 1959 Topps cards.

Stanfel, who played from 1952 to 1958 for the Detroit Lions and Washington Redskins, was a five-time first team All-Pro at guard. He appeared on just two football cards, his 1955 Bowman rookie card, pictured here, and a 1958 Topps.

Chances are very good that at least one of the two senior nominees will be elected to the Hall. The Senior Nominees page of the Hall of Fame web site shows that at least one senior candidate has been elected each year since 1998.

Yesterday I added a virtual partial sheet of 1957 Topps cards to the Vintage Football Card Gallery. It shows that 1957 Topps cards were released in one series, not two.

Yesterday, while searching the internet, I found a tiny picture of a partial uncut sheet of 1957 Topps football cards. Using the picture as a model–and doing a lot of squinting!–I created a virtual partial sheet of 1957 Topps cards and added it to the Vintage Football Card Gallery. Judging by the partial sheet, 1957 Topps football cards were not released in two series, as the price guides say. They were released in just one series, with most of the high-numbered cards being short prints.

(Click on the image to see the rest of the partial sheet.)

Jimmy Harris, a defensive back in the NFL and AFL from 1957 to 1961, passed away on August 8. Harris played one season each for the Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams, Dallas Texans, and Dallas Cowboys. He did not play the 1959 season.

Before his pro career, Harris was a star quarterback at Oklahoma. He went 25-0 over three seasons, contributing over half of the wins in the Sooners’ 47-game winning streak. NewsOK.com has an account of Harris’s college career, along with lots of photos.

The card pictured here is Harris’s rookie card, a 1957 Topps. Topps apparently colored a college photo of Harris to put him in Eagles green, because the image closely resembles the photo in the NewsOK.com article, and Harris wore number 20 for the Eagles, not number 15. The image on Harris’s 1960 Fleer card appears to have come from the same photo session, as well.

Harris appeared in a Dallas Texans uniform on a 1961 Fleer card and a 1961 Fleer Wallet Photo, but he played for the Cowboys that season.

To help me create virtual uncut sheets of vintage football cards, I would like your images of actual uncut sheets and badly miscut cards.

Most of you are familiar with my virtual uncut sheets of vintage football cards. There are a lot of sets I haven’t been able to do yet, though, because I have not seen pictures of real sheets. So I would like your help: if you see an uncut sheet for a pre-1970 set that I have not done yet, please send me an email and let me know where you saw it. The sheets I have completed are listed on the Vintage Football Card Gallery home page.

I would also like to see any pre-1970 cards that are miscut so badly–on either the front or the back–that they show part of the next card. The card pictured here is an example that I found in an eBay auction: it’s a miscut 1957 Topps Sid Watson card that shows Kyle Rote’s toe. If I see enough cards like this, I might be able to piece together what the uncut sheet looked like–especially if there is a pattern to the card numbers.

1957 Topps football cards have some coloring details that you might not have noticed.

While putting some 1957 Topps cards up for sale yesterday, I noticed some details that I hadn’t before. First, I noticed that, on every card, the background color behind the player’s name is the same as the background color on the right half of the card. This ties the two halves of the card together.

Second, I noticed that the player’s name is white on first series Baltimore Colts, Cleveland Browns, and Detroit Lions cards, but it is black on those teams’ second series cards. (Mike McCormack’s card is the only exception: it is a first series card, but his name is in black.) Apparently, Topps decided between series that black names looked better, so they changed the white names to black. Or, perhaps, when designing the first series cards, they thought that white names looked better for these teams, but when they got to the second series, they forgot and left them black.

When I started this article, I intended just to point out these trivia, but then I realized that someone actually sat down and made decisions about these details. Though the cards were meant for kids, an artist took the time to match the background colors and tweak the font colors to make the cards look their best. You have to appreciate that. (My initial title for this article was “Dumb Stuff I Noticed,” poking fun to my own card-geekiness, but I decided that that was insulting to whoever designed the cards.)

Finally, you have probably noticed that, in the 1957 Topps set, the cards for each team all have the same background colors. I have always liked this feature, and most of the major companies used it for at least one set. (Other examples are 1955 Bowman, 1962 Fleer, and 1967 Philadelphia.) If you look at the Lions team set, you can see that this coloring scheme highlights an error: the 49ers traded John Henry Johnson to the Lions in 1957, but Topps listed Johnson as a Brown. Topps even recolored Johnson’s uniform to put him in Browns colors. You can see this recoloring in a previous article.

It seems I’m on a bit of a helmet kick this week. This card caught my eye yesterday: it’s Jim David’s 1957 Topps card. David’s helmet didn’t look familiar, but knowing that he was from Colorado State (Colorado A&M at the time), I thought it might be a CSU Rams helmet. Sure enough, I found it on a page at ColoradoAggies.com. And what a find that was! The site has photos and illustrations of all of the school’s football uniforms from 1922 to present, along with tons of other material on the history of CSU athletics.

The helmet that David is wearing is known as the “bone style” helmet. The team wore it from 1951 to 1956, and it was part of the uniform that Rams fans recently chose as their all-time favorite. David’s image must be from 1951, since by 1952 he was a rookie with the Detroit Lions. Though the Lions didn’t draft him until the twenty-second round, David became a six-time Pro Bowler, playing in the defensive backfield with Hall of Famers Jack Christiansen (also a CSU alumnus) and Yale Lary. Thurman “Fum” McGraw, CSU’s first All-American football player and its athletic director from 1976 to 1986, was also a Pro Bowl defensive player for the Lions in the early 1950s.

Judging by the photos on ColoradoAggies.com, David’s helmet was actually green when the photo was taken, and his pants (shown on the right half of the card) were actually yellow. It was common in the 1950s for a card company to color an old black and white photo of a player to match the colors of his current team. (For another example, see my article on Alan Ameche.) In this case, I’m just happy that Topps kept the horns!
